June 1940. The French army crumbled under pressure from the Wehrmacht... The officer cadets of the Saumur Cavalry School, led by their instructors, sprang into action and held two German divisions at bay on the banks of the Loire for three days. The first resistance fighters of the Second World War, aided by the infantry officer cadets of Saint-Maixent, the men of the 1st Motorised Free Group and a regiment of Algerian riflemen, they defended a 30-kilometre front from Gennes to Montsoreau with 2,500 men against 40,000 enemies. Their admiring adversaries gave them the nickname ‘Kadetten’, which became ‘Cadets’, and the German General Feldt granted them their freedom with military honours. A tribute to all these soldiers in this superb comic book, the script for which was written by Patrick de Gmeline, an expert on the subject and author of the book *Les Cadets de Saumur*, published by Presses de la Cité in 1993.
